Use A Lattice Patio Cover And Some Creativity To Provide
Shade
At first, the very idea of a lattice patio
cover may seem counterproductive. After all, the
general idea of a patio cover is to provide shelter from the
elements, either the sun or the rain, and to protect your patio
from the destructive effects of those elements. Generally you
would expect something like this to be nylon or canvas, similar
to something you might see sticking out of the side of a
recreational vehicle. But lattice covers are becoming more
popular anyway because they can be decorative, and with a
little thought, work, and creativity, they can be functional as
well.
So let's back up for a second. A lattice patio cover is
usually made of wood although some are made from metals or hard
plastics. They look like a series of woven or cross stitched
strips. Metal and plastic ones generally are grained to look
like wood, but will last longer. However lattice clearly will
only block about half the sun or half the rain, which doesn't
seem like it would do much good. So here's where we can get
creative and increase lattice's ability to cover.
For instance you can use vegetation to provide cover.
Consider growing ivy or some other vine through the lattice. If
you've ever had ivy, you realize that it's simple to grow, but
a little tougher to get rid of if you ever want a change. The
end result however is similar to what you might expect when
sitting under a nice tree, which can certainly provide ample
shade on a hot sunny day.
Another way to improve the coverage ability of lattice is to
use hanging baskets. The results are similar to that of using
ivy and you can grow any flower or plant you desire in each
one. You'll still get the shade you want, but are limited to
one look like you are with ivy. It can really make your patio
beautiful and still provide shade. Just remember that plants
are typically not as hearty as ivy and you'll need to water
them more frequently if rain in your area is not plentiful.
But the point is that you can get a great look with lattice
patio covers and still get the protection from the sun that
your are looking for. Adding plants in the form of baskets or
adding ivy will give you shade similar to what you would find
under a tree. You just need to get a little creative. But
lattice gives you the chance to get as creative as you'd like
to get the perfect look for your patio.
